.Being a professional organizer, I have helped clients from the ages of ten to seniors get organized. I always enjoyed working with seniors.  The organizing job for seniors would consist of helping my clients adjust to downsizing, preparing a final wish workbook,  moving in with their children, adjusting to death of love ones and even meal planning for one.  It always gave me joy to give them a hand.  Seniors are so thankful after working with them. More seniors are staying in their homes. Their homes have to accommodate them as they age.
Here are some issues I needed to address when working with seniors. This list is helpful reminders if you take are care of aging parent or spouse.
  1.   When we get older are eyes cannot see, as good, we become forgetful, we cannot get around like we use too.   Most seniors I worked with need helpful aids like a cane or wheelchair which was something they had to get use too.  There is a lost of hearing which can cause issues in their home life when ringer has to be louder even the fire alarm may need to be a blinking light instead of  ringing alarm. They  also need aids to remember to take medication, what day and even special silverware or equipment just to open a jar or can.  These are just a few examples expressing what to expect when we get older. So these issues have to be noted when I work with seniors.
  2.   I'm usually contacted by the seniors themselves, but majority of the time it is their children calling.   They are looking for ways to help their parent organize their home to make it user friendly.
  3. Most of the time the seniors are being faced with many different situations; they just became a widow, downsizing their four-bedroom house to one room apartment, and coming home after a stroke or illness.
  4. I am usually called after the physical therapies or occupational therapies has all came and gone.  I come in to try to make my clients feel less like a prisoner in their own home. I try to create ease and adjustable organizing tips and solutions to help with daily activities.
  5. Make sure that safety is always top of the list.
  6. Making sure rugs are tape down
  7.  All areas of the home is well lite
  8. Organization is so important.  Everything must be pick up to lessen falls.
  9. Alert system are great for aging seniors.  Check online for great  alert system making sure they are tested and worth getting.
  10. Make sure to check up on them if they live alone.
  11. These are just a few suggestions. In later blogs I will cover more about taking care of seniors.
Peace, hope and love dear friends. Until the next blog.
